Our passion is learning. as we reach adulthood, attending a learning environment so often comes at a cost. any cost is a barrier. We believe in providing the opportunity for adults to learn how to create great digital experiences; whether that’s writing an app for a smartphone or creating a website for fun.Most importantly, we provide that  opportunity without the barriers; We don’t sell you anything and we won’t charge you anything. Last year we decided to make an effort to easily allow anyone in the UK to start their own CodeUp branch. We created a wiki to guide people through the process and help them make a group successful, and thanks to support from Northcoders, we can cover the cost of a Meetup account for each new branch, to ensure volunteers can run sessions without the barrier of associated costs. The Media Centre – the Huddersfield not-for-profit organisation committed to the digital and creative industries – has launched its own CodeUp, a free mentoring program for adults that want to learn to code.

CodeUp, originally founded in Manchester, aims to provide support and guidance to people with all levels of programming experience – from complete novices, to experienced individuals looking to learn their next new ‘language’. Well, last week was a busy one!

National Coding Week 2016 saw us team up once more with CodeUp UK to bring a ton of coding workshops to Manchester.

CodeUp UK was founded by Claire Dodd. The initial idea was formed in November 2014, and came about by people who wanted to learn how to code, but couldn’t find the support they required.

It was decided that online learning was a great way to grasp basic concepts and get started, but coding in an online learning environment was not representative of how to code in the real world, and neither did it help apply skills to real life scenarios. Continue reading The Story of CodeUp

It’s been almost six months since we helped organise the first Django Girls Manchester, and pledged to provide ongoing support for attendees through our CodeUp Manchester sessions. This time, we’re working together with the North West Ruby User group to bring Rails Girls to Manchester, and once again, ongoing support will be available through CodeUp Manchester.

The aim of Rails Girls is to provide tools and a community for women to understand technology, and to build their ideas. This is achieved by by providing a great experience on building things and by making technology more approachable. Continue reading CodeUp Manchester is supporting Rails Girls

This weekend saw Manchester hold its first ever Django Girls Manchester workshop. Held at MadLab, and organised by Leona So and Claire Dodd, 24 women and 10 coaches spent a day working together to help create websites using Python and Django.

Django Girls believe that the IT industry will greatly benefit from bringing more women into technology. They want to give women the opportunity to learn how to program.
